Carinthia

Population: 559,300
Area: 3,681 square mile
Capital: Klagenfurt

Carinthia received the European Nature and Environment Award for the excellent quality of the water of its more than 200 lakes that lie scattered in the region between the Alpine massif with the highest Austrian peak, the Grossglockner, and the Karawanken range. Two national parks (Nockberge and Hohe Tauern) and the pristine water of its rivers give further evidence for the intact nature in this southernmost province, which has a distinct Mediterranean flair due to its climate and the way of life of its people.

Carinthia passes for a holiday paradise not only because of its marvellous landscape but also because of the great diversity of its cultural sights from nearly all periods. The Roman excavations on the Magdalensberg, the Herzogstuhl, Maria Saal, the fortress Hochosterwitz, the Romanesque cathedral in Gurk, the abbey of St.Paul, the Renaissance palace Portia in Spittal, the old town centre and the heraldic hall in Klagenfurt, and numerous castles, palaces, and churches prove that man has made history in this region for thousands of years.

The culture of our days manifests itself in annual events, such as the Carinthian Summer in Ossiach. Cultural activities in castles, the Carnival in Villach, and many traditional events offer additional diversion for those who are not content with attractions like lake cruises, the mine and exhibition centre Huettenberg, gold planning, vintage trains and so on. Still, the main attraction is the country itself with its lakes, ski resorts, biking and hiking trails, riding farms, golf courses, rafting tracks, and its hospitable people. Those who are looking for the extraordinary can enjoy themselves with bungy jumping, or hot-air ballooning.
