LE CANIGOU

This peak has an altitude of 2785 m. Previously, at the beginning of the 20th century, Mount Canigou was exploited for its iron ore, which had a high purity. Nowadays, all the mines are closed.
On foot, you can reach the top in 5 hours from Vernet les bains by by one of several routes, or, if you're not that energetic, jeeps are also available to drive you to the top..
The CANIGOU is also known for its race: Les Championnats du Canigou. A running race of 30 Kms on the mountain. Climbing from 650 m to 2785 m, the best athletes complete the course in less than 3 hours!
