The north-western part of the country, here lies a land of most dense and green vegetation. It was here that Portugal was born, and the inheritance of a distant past is seen and felt everywere. Here you can feel the traditional Portuguese hospitality, enjoy abundant and varied gastronomy and taste light, acidulous wine (Vinho Verde), produce of the region. The rich variety of handicrafts goes from the shine of filigree to the colour of the local embroideries. Following the coastline road, from Porto to Valença, you will find beautiful beaches, seaside resorts and enchanting villages such as Caminha and Vila Nova de Cerveira.Throughout the region the rivers, waterfalls, vineyards and fertile plots combine with ancestral monuments. Nature lovers must vist the PENEDA-GERES NATIONAL PARK. In PORTO, the capital of this region situated on the mouth of the Douro river, where the Gothic elegance alternates with Baroque flair and ancient pastel houses deserves a walk visit specialy the riverside region "A Ribeira". To North you must visit BRAGA where the traditional ecclesiastic importance combines with today´s commercial and industrial prosperity. Founded by the Celts in 300 B.C. and a Roman administrative centre in 27 B.C., Braga shows everywhere its ancestrality.
5 Km away from the centre stands the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, with its monumental Baroque staircase and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro. Near, the ancient Monastery of Tibaes, dating back to the Suevian period and built in the 11th centuty. GUIMARAES is Portugal´s birthplace where you can feel the medieval touch. The castle and a well-preserved historic centre deserves your visit. Nearby lies the early settlement of Briteiros. BARCELOS is a medieval walled town with a dungeon. To visit are the Ceramics Museum, the Archeologic Museum of the Duke´s Palace and the Roman-Gothic mother-church. The ancient Jewish quarter deserves a walk tour. PONTE DE LIMA is a beautiful small town with a Roman bridge and medieval towers. VIANA DO CASTELO is famous for its handicrafts and colourful regional costumes. Spead along the north bank of the Lima estuary, where you can take trips on its typical boats, is plenty of ancient churches an museums waiting a good visit. VILA DO CONDE is an ancient medieval shipyard with many interesting architectonic places to visit.
