Costa de Prata
Located between Lisboa and Porto offers a choice between practicing water sports and the calm life of the seaside. Here you can witness of an historic and artistic heritage represented by monasteries, convents, castles and churches of renowed universal value. Costa de Prata is also famous for its traditional arts such as porcelain and crystal. Its rich gastronomy and its tasty Bairrada wines as well as regional sweets are also strong arguments for you to decide including this tour in your visit. In ALCOBAÇA you must visit the Monumental Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria, founded in 1152 and classified in the UNESCO´s Internacional Heritage list. AVEIRO and surroundings, famous for its lagoon. The town is crossed by canals where colourful painted boats (Moliceiros) sail. BATALHA, where the Portuguese Gothic masterpiece, the Santa Maria da Vitoria Monastery (14th-16th centuries) is a national landmark. Special mention to the Founder´s Chapel with its magnificent stain-glassed windows cloisters and Unfinished Chapels (Manueline style). BUÇACO, a magestic forest, where stands the ancient royal palace of neomanueline architecture. Milestones as memorials of the victory over Napoleonic army are the Obelisk and the Military Museum. 3 Km away is the termal spa of LUSO.
COIMBRA, one of Europe´s oldest university towns, has kept its secular academic traditions. Here you can ear a special kind of fado sang by black-caped students. Overlooking the city is the old University, with its famous tower and a sumptuous Baroque library. All over the city you can find signs of Roman presence side by side with Baroque and Romanesque Monasterys and Convents and churches. 16 Km to the south lies CONIMBRIGA, the most important Roman remains in Portugal. FATIMA is one of the most important Marian centres of pilgrimage in the catholic world. FIGUEIRA DA FOZ, a Summer resort on the mouth of Mondego river with long, sandy beaches and water sports facilities. A royal castle hangs above the graceful town of LEIRIA, where you can find also other medieval monuments. OBIDOS is a completly enclosed medieval walls small town with white-washed houses brightened up by colourful bougainvilleas. Another classified monument is Christ Convent in TOMAR where you can see also the Templars Castle and a 15th century Synagogue.
